Arrest Made As Swift Police Response Ends Alleged Joyride

A man’s alleged early-morning joyride came to an abrupt end after police tracked a stolen vehicle from Kaiwaka to Makarau, north of Auckland.

Police said the incident began around 5.30am on Monday, 11 August, when a resident heard their vehicle start up outside their home and drive away. Officers responded immediately, with the Police Eagle helicopter locating the vehicle as it travelled through Wellsford and headed south.

“Eagle continued to track the vehicle as it made its way south,” said Waitematā North Area Response Manager, Senior Sergeant Carl Fowlie. “Staff were able to deploy spikes successfully near Makarau.”

The vehicle stopped on Kaipara Coast Highway and the driver fled on foot towards the Makarau River. The police dog unit, Delta, tracked the suspect and took him into custody without incident.

“This was good work by our staff resulting in the man’s arrest,” Senior Sergeant Fowlie said. “Police will not tolerate this type of brazen offending in our community.”

A 49-year-old man appeared in North Shore District Court charged with burglary, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, and operating a vehicle recklessly. He has been remanded in custody to reappear on 2 October.
