Late-night disturbance leads to arrests and recovery of stolen property

A quick-thinking Auckland resident and a rapid police response have led to two arrests and the recovery of stolen property following a late-night burglary in the city’s west.

Police said the incident began around 10.51pm when a resident called 111 after hearing floorboards creaking inside his home.

“The caller said he’d gone to investigate and could see the outline of a man in the darkness,” said Inspector Wayne Kitcher, Area Prevention Manager for Auckland City West. “He disturbed the intruder, who got a fright and fled the scene.”

The Police Eagle helicopter, a dog unit, and frontline officers were deployed to the area within minutes. Eagle directed officers to two men seen nearby.

A 45-year-old man was arrested for breaching bail, while a 30-year-old man was tracked by a police dog through properties on Ennismore Road and arrested for burglary. A laptop was recovered during the arrest.

Inspector Kitcher praised the resident for contacting police immediately. “We want to reassure the community that we respond quickly to calls of this nature. Please call us as soon as possible so we can follow up and keep communities safe,” he said.

The 30-year-old man is due to appear in the Auckland District Court charged with burglary and being unlawfully in an enclosed yard.
