Arrest made following fatal Ōtara altercation

Police have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with a violent altercation in Ōtara on Friday night that left one man dead and another seriously injured.

The arrest was made overnight, and the man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in relation to the surviving victim, who has since been discharged from the hospital.

Counties Manukau Police launched a homicide investigation following the incident, which occurred shortly before midnight on Wymondley Road. Police responded to reports of a group of people fighting in the street and located two men with critical injuries at the scene. One man died shortly after being taken to hospital.

A post-mortem examination of the deceased was completed earlier today, and Police are continuing to investigate the full circumstances surrounding his death.

“Once those enquiries are complete, further charges are likely,” said Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua, who confirmed the arrest and thanked members of the community for their assistance.

The 19-year-old is due to appear in Manukau District Court on Monday.
