Fatal Crash in Pukekohe Involving Stolen Motorcycle Under Investigation

One person has died following a crash involving a stolen motorbike in Pukekohe this afternoon, Counties Manukau District Commander Superintendent Shanan Gray has confirmed.

At approximately 12.20pm, a Police unit spotted the stolen motorcycle travelling along Helvetia Road. The officers performed a U-turn in an attempt to signal the rider to stop. However, before the unit activated its lights and sirens, the motorbike accelerated away at speed.

The pursuing officers quickly lost sight of the motorcycle.

A short time later, another Police unit patrolling the area discovered the bike had crashed on McShane Street. The rider was found at the scene and was tragically pronounced dead.

A full scene examination is currently being carried out by the Serious Crash Unit, and McShane Street remains closed as investigations continue.

An inquiry is now underway to determine the circumstances of the incident. The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified, in line with standard procedure.

“We are working to support those affected, including the deceased’s family and the Police staff involved,” said Superintendent Gray.

As part of the ongoing investigation, Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the motorcycle or the events leading up to the crash.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Police via the 105 non-emergency line or online at www.police.govt.nz/use-105, quoting job number P063348335.
