“Shocking” Dog Abuse Caught on Video Leads to Arrest in South Auckland

A 29-year-old man has been charged after the alleged mistreatment of dogs in Manurewa was filmed and shared online, prompting a police response.

Officers became aware of the incident after footage circulated on social media, reportedly showing violent behaviour toward a puppy and two other dogs at a residential property.

Police say the incident occurred around 9.30am on 25 April, when a neighbour heard dogs in distress and went to investigate.

Counties Manukau Central Area Prevention Manager MinHo Lee said the neighbour began recording after suspecting the animals were being harmed.

“The footage is shocking and shows violent behaviour being directed towards a puppy and two other dogs,” he said.

The situation escalated when the neighbour attempted to intervene.

“He allegedly swung a pole at the victim, hitting their hand and causing their phone to fall into a bucket of water,” Inspector Lee said.

“He then continued swinging the pole around while threatening the victim.”

Police were called to the address and located one dog and two puppies. The man believed to be responsible was arrested at the scene.

Working alongside the SPCA, the animals were removed from the property and assessed by a veterinarian.

“The appalling treatment of these dogs is unacceptable, and this violent behaviour won’t be tolerated by Police,” Inspector Lee said.

The man is due to appear in the Manukau District Court facing charges of animal cruelty, assault with a blunt instrument, and threatening to kill.

Authorities are urging the public to report suspected animal mistreatment rather than intervene directly, warning such situations can quickly become dangerous.
