Watch: Ute driver gets that sinking feeling on East Auckland Beach

An unfortunate Ute driver got too close to the ocean at Umupuia Beach, near Maraetai, yesterday, and had his vehicle swallowed up by the sea after getting stuck on the soft sand right as the tide was coming in.

The unknown driver appeared to be in possession of a work vehicle which had the company markings of Frame Quality Homes emblazoned on its side.

Locals spoken with by an an AucklandNews reporter, who also shot the footage, said the driver had become stuck after taking the ute “far too close”. Another group spoken with speculated the driver may have been out collecting shellfish, despite the rahui currently in place at Umupuia.

Several rescue attempts were made by groups of volunteers, at one stage three vehicles attempted to pull the ute out by using towing lashes -but was ultimately unsuccessful. The vehicles retreated from the water just before they too became stuck.

A person walking along a beach with a phone in hand, surrounded by a sandy shore and hills in the background.
A man, believed to be the stricken ute’s driver leaving the beach after abandoning the vehicle’s recovery.

According to Auckland Council, driving is not permitted on any beach in the Auckland region, except for Muriwai and Karioitahi which require a permit.

The video has attracted huge interest on social media where many commentators have questioned the wisdom of taking any vehicle on to the beach.

One person commented that the act was disrespectful to Maori, saying ” He’s driving on top of our kai.”

The vehicle was not visible from the shoreline this morning (September 8), meaning it may have been salvaged.
