The 28-year-old was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital after he became trapped beneath a sand dune. Despite medical efforts, he remained in critical condition and passed away today.
Police say enquiries into the circumstances of the man’s death will be carried out on behalf of the Coroner.
Muriwai’s shifting sand dunes and powerful coastal environment are well known for their hazards, with authorities regularly warning the public to exercise caution when visiting the popular but unpredictable beach.
