The University of Auckland has moved to quash speculation surrounding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater, issuing a strong statement of support and confirming she was not asked to step down.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Chancellor Cecilia Tarrant said claims that Professor Freshwater had been pushed out were “totally incorrect.”
“The University Council fully supports our Vice-Chancellor and did all it could to persuade her to stay with the University,” Tarrant said. “She has our full confidence.”
Professor Freshwater, who has led Waipapa Taumata Rau since 2020, announced her decision to resign last week. Her tenure included overseeing the university through a global pandemic, financial headwinds, and ongoing changes within New Zealand’s tertiary education sector.
The Chancellor praised Freshwater’s five years of leadership, describing her as a guiding force who had strengthened the university during challenging times. “She has worked tirelessly… and will leave the University in a position of strength,” Tarrant said.
While the timing and reasons behind Professor Freshwater’s departure have sparked public interest and some media speculation, the University maintains she is stepping down on her own terms and will continue to lead until an agreed handover takes place.
The University Council has not yet confirmed the timeline for appointing her successor.
