Teen charged after violent Mt Albert disorder leaves multiple injured

A 17-year-old has been arrested following a serious disorder in Mt Albert that left several people injured, including two in a critical condition.

Detective Senior Sergeant Anthony Darvill, Auckland City West Area Investigations Manager, said the teenager will appear in the Auckland Youth Court on Thursday 9 April. He faces charges of wounding, aggravated assault, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and driving while unlicensed.

Emergency services were called to a large gathering on Phyllis Street about 9.50pm on Friday 27 March, where disorder broke out among a group of ახალგაზრდ people. Early reports suggest a vehicle was driven toward partygoers, while violence also erupted among those at the scene.

Darvill described the behaviour as “clearly unacceptable” and said it would not be tolerated.

“Investigators are working diligently to identify those responsible and hold them to account for their actions,” he said.

New Zealand Police said enquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what occurred, but indicated the incident appears to be isolated.

“I want to reassure people that we are working as hard as we can to get to the bottom of what happened,” Darvill said.

Hato Hone St John responded with multiple ambulances and crews, treating six people at the scene. Two patients in a serious condition were transported to Auckland City Hospital, while three others with moderate injuries were also taken to hospital. One person with minor injuries was treated at the scene.

Police are continuing efforts to identify others involved and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
