Britomart Renamed Waitematā Station Amid Debate Over Cost and Identity

Auckland’s central train hub will soon be known by a new name, with Britomart Station officially becoming Waitematā Station from September 21.

Auckland Transport says the change reflects a name gifted by mana whenua in 2017, part of a wider process to assign traditional names to the four new stations on the City Rail Link network. For the past several years, the dual name “Waitematā (Britomart)” has been used to help commuters adjust, but from this week timetables, maps, journey planning tools, and in-station announcements will show Waitematā Station only. Physical signage will be updated progressively.

Supporters of the move say it honours the cultural significance of the Waitematā Harbour, likened in te reo Māori to volcanic obsidian, and recalls Te Arawa traditions of placing a mauri stone in the northern harbour.

However, the decision has not been without criticism. Some Aucklanders question the need to change the identity of a station that has been known as Britomart since it opened in 2003, especially given the name is also closely tied to the surrounding heritage precinct. Others argue the cost of rebranding signage and materials could be difficult to justify at a time when Auckland Transport faces financial pressure.

Opened on reclaimed land beside the harbour, Britomart brought trains back into the city centre and became one of Auckland’s most recognisable landmarks. Under the City Rail Link project, the station will be transformed into a through-station connected to new underground tunnels beneath Albert Street.

When the CRL opens in 2026, Waitematā will join Te Waihorotiu, Karanga-a-Hape, and Maungawhau stations as part of Auckland’s reshaped rapid transit network.
