Police Warn of Delays as Protest March Planned for Auckland Harbour Bridge

Motorists are being urged to plan ahead and expect major delays on Auckland’s motorway network tomorrow, with protestors planning to march across the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Inspector Stefan Sagar, Relieving Waitematā District Commander, said the protest is expected to begin at Onepoto Domain on the North Shore around 9am before participants move south towards Victoria Park in central Auckland. Disruption is expected to continue into the afternoon, particularly for southbound traffic over the bridge.

“Large numbers of pedestrians accessing the Harbour Bridge pose significant safety risks to themselves, our Police staff, and other motorists,” Inspector Sagar said. “Weather may also pose further safety risks to pedestrians in that area.”

Police are working closely with NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Transport, advising motorists to follow detour routes including State Highways 16 and 18 where possible. Additional traffic management will be in place along the protest route.

“Police respect the right to protest, but we have reiterated safety concerns to organisers as part of our ongoing communication,” Inspector Sagar said. “Our expectation is that protestors move safely and efficiently on the day.”

Police will have a significant presence across the area, with resources deployed to ensure the protest is lawful and managed safely.

“We understand this will cause disruption to the public’s travel. Our focus is on keeping everyone safe,” Inspector Sagar said.

Travellers are encouraged to check the NZTA Journey Planner, NZTA Auckland social media pages, and the Auckland Transport website for the latest updates on diversions and public transport
