Firearms and drugs found after New Lynn speeding stop

A routine traffic stop in New Lynn early this morning uncovered firearms, drugs, and an outstanding arrest warrant.

Police say around 3am this morning, a patrol noticed a vehicle speeding along Titirangi Road. When signalled to stop, the driver allegedly became aggressive toward officers, while two passengers refused to provide details.

Waitematā West Area Prevention Manager, Inspector Kelly Farrant, said further checks revealed one passenger had an active arrest warrant.

“As the male was being removed from the vehicle, officers observed a small handgun and ammunition in the footwell. Staff acted swiftly to secure the firearm without further incident,” Inspector Farrant said.

Police also found methamphetamine and cannabis in the vehicle.

It was the second firearm seized overnight. Hours earlier in Manurewa, officers discovered a sawn-off shotgun in the vehicle of a patched gang member during a separate traffic stop.

“These incidents highlight the importance of our frontline staff’s safety and vigilance,” Inspector Farrant said. “It’s reassuring to have removed these weapons from our communities.”

A 27-year-old man is due to appear in the Waitākere District Court charged with unlawfully possessing a firearm, possessing methamphetamine, possessing cannabis, and breaching bail.

A 54-year-old man will appear in the Manukau District Court charged with unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition, and possessing cannabis.
